Le Lyrial sails primarily in Europe, South America and around Africa. When in Europe, it offers culturally rich itineraries throughout the Mediterranean. I’m just impressed by what the cruise line offers, and would love to hear about any experiences from OMAAT readers. Ponant has four new ships on order, so even more cruise lovers will be able to enjoy “The French Touch” beginning in summer 2018. The maitre d' will seat you at an English-speaking table at dinner, if you ask, and all the mainly Indonesian crew speak English (often better than they speak French). There will always be English-speaking excursions when there are international passengers onboard, and announcements are made in English, as well as in French. We like the personal touch, shuttles into town and town maps should we not do the offered excursions.

Ponant’s a la carte pricing is widely considered to provide good value. Note that gratuities for the crew are not included in your fare; and, the onboard currency is the euro. Le Boreal's interiors are like those of a minimalist boutique hotel. Everything is taupe, cream and white, with an emphasis on luxurious textures, from leather-fronted white drawers in the cabin to taupe silk cushions on the bed. Black-and-white Philip Plisson photo art lines the corridors.

Most passengers on a Le Lyrial cruise are French, with a smattering of cruisers from English speaking-countries (mostly U.K. and Australia) as well as other European countries and occasionally Asia. So we went on the brand new Le Commandant Charcot to Antarctica on their first ever Ross Sea Expedition (24 nights onboard - talk about jumping into the cruising deep end for our first time). I must admit that the service, food and general comfort level was INCREDIBLE - it surpassed ALL of our expectations. The accommodation was meticulously constructed and the general quality was everywhere (down to Diptyque bath amenities). To be honest, you cannot really go wrong with freshly baked French baguettes, French butter, French Macarons at each and every meal... My ONLY gripe was the excursions part - we are an active household and we were made to believe that you get off the boat a lot (despite it being in a remote place like Antarctica). The reality was that you did get off the boat but not nearly as much as you'd like...
The ship has a wonderfully calm vibe, with a sedate elegance and a marine-inspired decor. We particularly loved the primary atrium sculpture, which mimics whirling columns of fish. We have just returned from a cruise expedition to Greenland. We are absolutely delighted with our stay on board. Everything was absolutely perfect, truly faultless. Some friends had recommended PONANT to us and pointed out that Captain Garcia was an exceptional man, he did not let down his reputation, far from it.
