Most retirement developments offer either properties for sale or for rent, but newer ones may offer both tenure options, and possibly shared ownership too. The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve. People have enough to eat and drink to meet their needs and staff assisted or prompted people with meals and fluids if they needed support. Caring for a loved one living with dementia is a tough and emotionally charged challenge. It is a home designed to provide comfortable, safe and accessible accommodation.
Where people were not able to give informed consent staff and the manager ensured their rights were protected. We also found that, although all medicines were administered by staff who were trained to do so, some aspects of the medicines management needed improvement. People's care records did not demonstrate their involvement in decision making. Mental capacity assessments were not completed and best interest meetings had not always taken place for people who lacked capacity to make decisions for themselves. We ensure that our daily activities provide stimulation and a sense of wellbeing. We believe that activities are a fundamental part of our residents’ lives.

EAC Advice is a free, specialist and independent telephone advice service provide by the charity Elderly Accommodation Counsel . As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other.

We provide bespoke service to ensure the best quality of person-centred care is provided to all of our residents. We support social, psychological and spiritual needs alongside clinical and care support to enable individuals to lead the life they wish, where possible. We saw many examples of positive and caring interactions between the staff and people living in the service. People were able to express their views and staff listened to what they said and took action to ensure their decisions were acted on.
Each floor has designated dining areas which are dressed and maintained to provide a pleasant and enjoyable eating experience. We look, listen and hear the views, opinions and wishes of all our residents, their families and friends in the home to enable them to contribute to ensuring meals we provide are to their expectations.

For example staffing levels were based on the assessed needs of the people. If necessary, because of unforeseen circumstances, staffing levels would be increased to ensure people’s needs were met. We saw that the staff interacted with people who lived in the service in a caring, respectful and professional manner. One person said that staff were, "Alright." Another person told us, "I couldn’t find anything to complain about." We saw that the staff were provided with training in safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards , which was updated every year. This meant that staff were provided with the information that they needed to ensure that people were safeguarded.

There were 51 people living in the home on the first day of our inspection.This inspection took place on 26 April and 2 May 2017 and was unannounced on both days. Handford House Care Home provides personal and nursing care for up to 52 people across two floors. At the time of our inspection there were 46 people living at the home.We found the following examples of good practice. People's care records showed that where concerns about their wellbeing had been identified the staff had taken appropriate action to ensure that people were provided with the support they needed. This included seeking support and guidance from health care professionals, including the doctor, district nurse and dietician. We inspected this service on 26 February 2015 and the inspection was unannounced.
